Buying a Biscuit Oven Band: What to Check and What to Send

Width, length, temperature, wire gauge, weight and edges — the details that decide how a biscuit oven band performs.

The oven band is the belt that carries dough through a biscuit oven, so it affects baking quality, line tracking and fuel use all at once. Most biscuit plants use a Z-47 articulated wire band, also called a bake oven band or Z47 belt. This checklist covers what to decide before ordering one, and what to send your supplier for an accurate quotation.

1. Measure the oven

Note the belt width and the total endless length of the band on your oven. If you are replacing a band, measure the old one and photograph it, including the edge and a close-up of the weave.

2. Know your baking temperature

The maximum oven temperature decides the material and wire gauge. Our standard Z-47 band in 18 SWG mild steel wire is rated up to 600 °C. Stainless steel and other materials are available when your process needs them.

3. Choose the wire gauge

Z-47 bands are made from 17 gauge (1.40 mm), 18 gauge (1.20 mm) or 20 gauge (0.90 mm) wire. Heavier wire carries more load and lasts longer; lighter wire means a lighter band.

4. Balance weight against fuel cost

A heavy band lasts long, but it absorbs more energy on every pass through the oven, which raises fuel cost — electricity, oil or gas. For reference, a mild steel Z-47 band in 18 SWG weighs about 680 g per sq. ft. Ask your supplier to balance belt life against weight for your oven.

5. Ask for a single-piece band

Joints and welds in an oven band can cause tracking problems. As ovens get longer, the band should be supplied in one single piece wherever possible.

6. Check flatness and openness

After articulation, a good Z-47 band is laminated (flattened) under a press so the biscuits sit on an even surface, while the open weave lets hot air circulate around the product for uniform baking.

7. Select the edge

Z-47 bands are supplied with a welded edge or a bent edge. Strengthened edges keep the band flexible around the drums without making the sides thicker than the rest of the band. See conveyor belt edge types.

What to send for a quotation

  • Belt width and endless length
  • Maximum baking temperature
  • Product baked (biscuit, cookie, cracker …)
  • Preferred material and wire gauge, if known
  • Edge type
  • Photos of the current band or the oven drawing
  • Oven make, if the band is a replacement

Send these on our quotation form or see more on biscuit oven belts.
